Switzerland's multi-level tax system

The Swiss tax system is multi-level and is represented by three types of taxes:

  1. Federal - all residents of the state are taxed; taxes have a fixed rate throughout the country. Federal tax rates are:
  • on profit - 8,5%;
  • income - 11,5%;
  • VAT - 7,6%;
  • for dividends - 35%;
  • on capital - up to 0,825%.
  1. Cantonal - designed for residents of a particular canton and the rate is set locally. There are 2021 cantons in 26, each with the following tax deductions:
  • for donation and inheritance;
  • for corporate profits;
  • land;
  • income for individuals and so on.
  1. Municipal - provided for each specific locality and calculated by multiplying the cantonal tax by the coefficient in the municipality.

On average, these taxes range from cantonal to 90-140%. There are 2021 registered municipalities in 2, with the following being considered common taxes:

  • income;
  • consumer.

Otherwise, municipal fees duplicate federal and cantonal taxes. If you add up all taxes, the total rate does not exceed 25%. To correctly calculate the tax burden, a specific canton and municipality should be considered.

In Switzerland the tax period is 12 months. The declaration is completed and submitted to the competent services no later than April 1 of the previous reporting period.

Another unique feature of the Swiss tax system is that there are no strict penalties in the form of fines or arrest for those taxpayers who do not comply with the filing deadlines. The whole issue is resolved with just a simple reminder that it is time to pay taxes.
